Traditional Micmac Handcrafted Brown Ash Pack Basket

Value $350

Micmac basketmaker Richard Silliboy has been harvesting ash and weaving potato baskets, pack baskets, and other traditional styles for decades. Historically, these baskets were used by the Micmac people to store and transport food, and to carry their belongings when they navigated to a different location.

Growing up in Houlton, Maine, Richard’s mother taught him basketmaking and he continues to keep this traditional art alive through his own work and sharing his knowledge with others. Richard is a Tribal Council member of the Aroostook Band of Micmacs and also serves on the Board of Directors of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association
